Halloween Fact - Pumpkins

Pumpkins have been around for thousands of years. Their origins are in Central America and they are a food crop. Over time, pumpkins spread across North and South America. When Europeans came to the New World, they found pumpkins were plentiful and used in cooking by Native Americans. They took seeds back to Europe where they quickly became very popular.

Today, growing humongous pumpkins is a big time hobby. And, breaking the world record has become an annual event. Top prize money for the biggest giant pumpkin is as much as $25,000 at fall festivals. The current world record for giant pumpkins is 1,810.5 lbs. Chris Stevens of New Richmond, Wisconsin, brought his 1,810.5 pound pumpkin to the Stillwater Harvest fest in Stillwater, Minnesota, on October 9, 2010.

Pumpkin chucking (or Punkin Chunkin’) is a competitive activity in which teams build various mechanical devices designed to throw a pumpkin as far as possible. Catapults, trebuchets, ballistas and air cannons are the most common means of chucking pumpkins. Over the past decade, pumpkin chucking has become more and more popular. It is now a televised sporting event shown nationwide around Thanksgiving.
