Halloween Fact - Candy Corn

Skeleton Foundry image October 30th is National Candy Corn Day. But, did you know that candy corn has been around since the 1880s? Who first made candy corn is unknown, but the Wunderle Candy Company of Philadelphia, PA, was first to produce it commercially. However, the Goelitz Confectionery Company (now the Jelly Belly Company) is most closely associated with the making of Candy Corn. Making candy at the turn of the 20th century was done by hand. It was manufactured seasonally from March through November. Its tricolor design was considered revolutionary for its time and people flocked to buy them.

The National Confectioners Association estimates that 20 million pounds (9,072,000 kilograms) of candy corn are sold annually. The top branded retailer of candy corn, Brach's, sells approximately 2 billion kernels each year. That's enough candy corn to circle the earth 4.25 times if the kernels were laid end to end. Though most candy corn is purchased at Halloween, the confection is available year-round.
